This course introduces students to the creative, technical, and storytelling principles of video editing, emphasizing how editorial decisions shape meaning, emotion, rhythm, and narrative. Students explore fundamental editing techniques including cuts, fades, montage, series of shots, inserts, reaction shots, point of view, parallel editing, continuity, movement, pacing, transitions, and the Rule of Six. Through hands-on exercises and critical analysis, students learn how shot selection, timing, sound, and visual structure influence the audience’s experience while developing a working knowledge of DaVinci Resolve as their primary editing platform. Rather than focusing solely on software training, students apply editing techniques to a variety of exercises before preproducing, shooting, and editing a 1–2 minute original narrative project that demonstrates intentional storytelling, technical control, and creative editorial decision-making.
