AAF Nashville: Nossi & The Student ADDY Awards

“The ADDY Awards show was a class act…clearly a lot of big names will be coming out of Nashville.” – Russell Ewings, Student

The Nashville Student ADDY Awards are part of the American Advertising Awards competition and with 307 entries, Nashville ranks as the largest local competition in the nation (see Awards Photo Gallery below).

On Tuesday, February 24, AAF Nashville recognized it’s 2015 Student ADDY Winners during the awards show at Play. The creative energy within the room was palpable and gave the event an uncanny, zestful air; over 300 students, parents, instructors and industry professionals gathered to toast the winning work from nine colleges and universities in Middle Tennessee. Participating schools included Nossi College of Art, the Art Institute of Tennessee Nashville, Austin Peay State University, Belmont University, Lipscomb University, Middle Tennessee State University, Nashville State Community College, O’More College of Design and Watkins College of Art Design and Film. A total of 63 students received ADDY awards.

A panel of the country’s most creative ad folks from the biggest ad agencies judges the Student ADDY Awards as they do the ADDYs competition; recognition by these ad folks is a testament to the student’s creativity.  Although there are 12 distinct categories of ads (including Television, Radio, Interactive, etc.), part-time and full-time students are encouraged to enter works they have created for any class assignment or project; students may submit as many pieces as they like for judging. Nossi’s award-winners will go on to compete at the district level against schools from Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. District winners then advance to the national competition, where they compete to receive $1,000.

This competition presented an opportunity for students to gain valuable insight on both the demands of Nashville’s creative industry and their preparedness to enter the field after graduation. Katherine Seghers, who is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Commercial Photography, was awarded during the Student ADDY’s. She observed: “The ADDYs offered a chance to see how my work compared to other local student photographers in the eyes of third party judges. It also shows people who aren’t from Nossi what our students are doing.”

Students “felt like stars” as they dined on spectacular food and graced the stage to accept their awards. The night was inspiring for many, and Emily Shafer is immensely grateful for having participated. She writes, “I remember when I started Nossi thinking how amazing it would be to win an ADDY, so I’m just so honored by this!”
