Faculty Spotlight: Higgins Bond

Professional illustrator Higgins Bond splits her time as a professional artist to teach our students at Nossi. Her experiences as a freelance illustrator in the real world with clients like NBC TV and Anheuser-Busch are priceless assets to our students as they prepare to start their own careers.

In her 36 years of illustrating, Higgins has worked with high-profile clients like Hennessy Cognac and The Franklin Mint. Not only has she illustrated 38 books in this time as well, she has also been added as a footnote in history as the first African-American woman to illustrate a stamp for the United States Postal Service.

After working as a freelance illustrator from home for so many years, Higgins’ interaction with her students is not only invigorating but also educational for herself. Even though she is trained in traditional art, Higgins is a supporter of teaching computer graphics.

“[Computer graphics] is the future of illustration,” says Higgins, “and the students are eager to be a part of it.”

Her advice to current and future Nossi students is to be consistent with their work, but most of all to keep it as unique as possible. Higgins understands the importance of standing out in the crowd. With help from instructors like Higgins, Nossi students have a great head start in the art industry.
