Art for Change – October 6, 2012

Art for Change is a competition among illustration students from Nossi College of Art with the goal to create awareness around Nashville’s Adopt A Meter program and bring patrons to Downtown Nashville. We encourage Nashvillians and visitors to come out and join the First Saturday Art Crawl earlier, and bring some change (quarters, dimes and nickels) to vote for your favorite art around each participating donation meter. Maps of all the meters will be handed out along Second Avenue, Broadway and 5th Avenue North.

WHEN: September 1, 2012, from 1-7 p.m. (rain date October 6, 2012)

Painting from 1-4 p.m. – students will create art at select Adopt A Meters in Downtown Nashville.

Voting from 1-7 p.m. – visitors and First Saturday Art Crawl participants are encouraged to vote by dropping change into the Adopt A Meter next to the art piece they like best

WHERE:  Second Avenue North, Broadway from the Hard Rock Café to 5th Avenue North

WHO:  The Metropolitan Homelessness Commission in partnership with The Key Alliance, Nossi College of Art, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, Fifth Avenue Arts Commission, Downtown Partnership, Urban Residents Association and others.

WHY:  Create awareness for solutions to homelessness in Nashville. It takes the whole community to end homelessness in Nashville.

The event is a collaborative effort of Nossi College and downtown stakeholders. It takes the entire community to come together and end chronic homelessness and reduce overall homelessness in Nashville. The winner of this contest will be announced at a separate event to honor our sponsors, volunteers, participants and supporters. The art will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Proceeds will benefit The Key Alliance’s Adopt A Meter program.

The Metropolitan Homelessness Commission in partnership with The Key Alliance developed the Adopt A Meter program as a means to create awareness around homelessness in Nashville. All proceeds from the Adopt A Meter program benefit permanent solutions to homelessness including a homeless outreach initiative and Housing First. Housing First takes a homeless individual off the street and places him/her into permanent housing. Once securely housed, a Housing First participant works with a case manager with the goal to remove barriers to housing and employment and move toward self-sufficiency.
