For Graphic Design Coordinator Michael Kristof, Communication is the Key

  Story by Les Kerr

Award-winning designer Michael Kristof brings real-world knowledge of the design field to his new position as Graphic Design Coordinator at Nossi College of Art. As an experienced practitioner in the world of graphic design, he knows how important passion for a craft is to motivate those who want to learn, and he is encouraged by the enthusiasm he has found among Nossi College students.

“I do my best to impress upon the students that they need to apply themselves,” said Michael. “They are here because they have a passion for what they are doing. They want to learn and understand. Sometimes, the exploring process can intimidate people. It’s important to provide a safe place for them to experiment, make mistakes and realize that all of that is part of the learning process.”

Technology also plays a part in consistently getting information to students, according to the new coordinator. Michael says students and teachers are benefiting from programs that allow curriculum and assignments to be posted online. Software shows exactly what is coming up in course content and allows more immediate access to instructors.

“Students are able to see what is expected week by week,” Michael said. “Assignments are posted in an easily understandable format. Instructors can also e-mail content and tips to students.”

In addition to student enthusiasm, Michael is encouraged by the dedication of the college’s leadership. “This is a great environment and the staff is outstanding,” he said. “I was really impressed when Cyrus Vatandoost, Nossi College’s Executive Vice President, said to me, ‘Our philosophy is to do what’s best for the students. That’s how decisions are made.’ You can’t ask for more than that.”

The design coordinator knows whereof he speaks when it comes to practical experience. As an art director at Young and Rubicam, Michael contributed to national campaigns for AT&T, Colgate, Dr. Pepper, Holiday Inn, Chef Boyardee and others, including the U.S. Mint. The firm’s television campaign for the Mississippi Department of Tourism was so successful it overloaded the agency’s call center and forced the early take-down of the advertising campaign.

The New York American Marketing Association recognized a campaign to which Michael contributed with its prestigious Effie Award, a national honor focusing specifically on ad campaign results. The award was the result of a campaign for Citizens Bank. His long and respected commercial career inspires him to not only teach Nossi College students graphic design techniques but how to survive in the marketplace after graduation.

“When I was in school,” Michael said, “we didn’t learn much about business. My goal here is not just about making sure students receive a degree but that they become ‘work ready’ to start producing in their first jobs after they leave school.”

Michael’s teaching philosophy includes encouraging his students in problem-solving and focusing on exactly who the audience is for a particular campaign. “The bottom line is that what we do is more than design,” said Michael. “We communicate. I stress the importance of communicating effectively to students.”

A thirteen-year resident of Nashville, Michael continues to watch the creative community grow and thrive. “There is great work coming out of this place and we are becoming a creative hub. Of course, more technology needs more support and I see the standards getting higher and improving all the time.”
